Set in the enchanting cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota, Suria Mountain Hotel provides a unique ecolodge experience. The lodge specializes in hosting birdwatchers that come to see the many species of highland birds that inhabit Los Quetzales National Park. Lodge amenities include a restaurant, bar, nature trails, and internet access.
San Gerardo de Dota is well off of the beaten tourist path. This remote mountainous area is 7,000 feet in elevation, making the climate cool and damp. It is the cloud forest after all!
Birdwatching is not only fantastic in Los Quetzales National Park, but also the entire area. Resplendent Quetzals are abundant, as are Hummingbirds, Trogons, and many other rare and exotic species. Tours depart daily from the lodge with naturalist guides that know where to find the elusive birds. Of course, you can just walk the grounds of the lodge's ten acres property in search of birds and other wildlife.
Suria Lodge provides a peaceful ambiance. The grounds are well-maintained, surrounded by cloud forest, creeks, and farms. The restaurant serves typical Costa Rican foods and specialty dishes such as trout. Tropical drinks are served at the lodge's bar, or just enjoy a cup of fresh brewed Costa Rican coffee.
Rooms are basic but clean, cozy, and tastefully decorated with wooden furnishings. Each offers comfortable beds and private bathrooms with hot water showers; all that one would expect from a rustic mountain ecolodge. Check the Amenities Section for a complete list of what is in each room.

Welcome was positive and cheerful, a great experience with the woman behind the front desk. Guides were knowledgeable and provided a good experience. The down side came in the dining room - there were 3 wait staff and they seemed to cater to groups. We were warned by the front desk when large groups would be sitting for dinner and adjusted our reservations accordingly. However, in the dining room we were ignored for over 30 mins and when I finally asked for menus, were met with attitude. This continued through the meal and we left 2 1/2 hours later, having had a terrible experience. This meant we went elsewhere for dinner the next evening, despite having to drive windy, narrow, unlit roads…but we discovered a gem of a restaurant with a wonderful waitress and amazing food. The room itself offered a spectacular view over the forest and was in the newer building, so I understand they are continuing to improve. However, there was not a hook to hang anything or a chair to place a suitcase or bag.

only issue we experienced here was limited hot water in the cabin. Location is good and reasonably quiet, facilities are in good repair, grounds are well kept and service was fine.

My biggest complaint would a lack of heat in the main lodge and the rooms. The lodge area had a fireplace, but that did not heat that big area. The bathroom in our room was very cold.

Front desk person spoke almost no English, but we worked around that. New deck was under construction, but that didn't really affect us during our stay. Some of the best food we had at any of our accommodations. They allowed us to come in early and this was a very good value.

This hotel was the least favorite of the trip. One would expect that someone working the desk in a hotel that deals with Americans would know the word for key, or at least not take 5 minutes to think to pick one up to show you what she was saying. The meals here were very weak, although we were forwarned by others staying there and did not eat any meal here except breakfast. The breakfast we ate there was poor, the one packed for us was pretty inedible.

It was very cold and heating offered was insufficient. Very isolated location. Local self-guided walks and birding were good.
